Grace Flock

I create intuitive, melancholic, semi-abstract landscapes, colourful abstracts, and provoking, rebellious, contemporary portraits.

My art is not just a visual representation but a profound expression of the power of memories in our lives. It’s about sharing the stories of our past, the places we've been, and the emotions we've felt. I firmly believe that our shared humanity is rooted in our emotions, and by expressing these in my art, I aim to establish a profound connection with the viewer.

I work spontaneously, I remain entirely open to the possibilities and respond to the evolving piece I am creating. I approach each art piece as a playful exercise of a series of "what-ifs." I enjoy experimenting with different materials, and not having a clear destination in mind allows me to try things without worries. Most of the time, I do not have a clear destination. I prefer to start my work using fluid mediums, such as inks and watery acrylics, as this gives me the least control. It helps me to tap into my subconscious, allowing creativity to flow through while blocking, as much as possible, the logical and analytical side. This process allows me to respond emotionally to the textures, marks and colours I place in each layer and make adjustments based on how I feel about them. In the process, reminiscence happens, and those stories get told on the substrate, resulting in semi-abstract/abstract landscapes. When creating portraits in contemporary collages, I spend a great amount of time reviewing images from magazines and old books, envisioning how to transform them into parts of that portrait. During this process, personal and emotionally charged stories resurface and are translated into the decisions I make when putting it all together. Recently, portraits have evolved into semi-abstract figurative paintings. I do not like “pretty” or “girly”; my women are persistent and resilient, with struggles and hopes. Above all, each of them has something to say.
